Congratulations to Cambridge on taking the Bronze Medal at the 2020 Winter Warmer held 25/26 January at Spinnaker SC. They were first university – ahead of consistent foes Exeter. Birdham Bandits ran out winners, with O&CSS runners-up. Detailed results will be available for a time on the kSail website.
Our corespondent Olivia Jacklin reports:
Cambridge Blue were in action at the Wessex 2020 Winter Warmer. In true Spinnaker style, conditions on Saturday were fairly light and shifty. Nonetheless, Cambridge put out a strong performance in the round robin – sailing an impressive 12 races and winning all but one (losing to Oxford Blue which can said to be a ‘banana skin’ mistake!). This meant that the team was leading the event overnight.
Cambridge returned to Spinnaker on Sunday were conditions were pretty gusty and shifty. The teams were split into leagues with Cambridge Blue sailing 6 races in the gold league. The impressive set of teams meant that racing was competitive and to the highest quality. Cambridge fought hard to earn a place in the semi-final against OCSS, which was lost 0-2. Cambridge then sailed in the Petit Final against Exeter. Here Cambridge took the first race, but Exeter struck back to take the second. Despite this temporary setback, Cambridge hung on to win the playoff 2-1, so finishing in a very respectable overall 3rd place.
This well-run event with plenty of good teams provided useful practice for the upcoming Qualifiers and other events later on in the term. A big thank you to the Umpires for their hard work and to Southampton University for arranging such an excellent event.
