Introduction

Sailing, Windsurfing, Kiteboarding For Cambridge Students

The Cambridge University Cruising Club is a normal university club that offers sailing, windsurfing, kiteboarding for Cambridge students. Besides that we also organise team racing and RYA Training. There is also a senior section that maintains news items and historical information. In addition, the senior section organises social events for alumni. Yachting, ‘big boat’ stuff in craft over 24 feet in length, is a separate University club: the Cambridge University Yacht Club.

The annual student membership fee is £50. The only other fee you will pay is the cost of transport to and from Grafham Water (£5 per return trip).   Grafham Water is a very large reservoir 25 miles to the west of Cambridge. We use it for most of our sailing and windsurfing activities; kiteboarding takes place elsewhere. The Club does not have sufficient resources to offer its activities to all disabled people, but there is a Grafham Water Sailability charity that runs a sailing programme to cater for those with special needs.

We Offer Sailing, Windsurfing, Kiteboarding to Students of All Abilities

We welcome sailors, windsurfers, and kiteboarders of all abilities. That includes people who compete at the top levels of the sport. Also those who are happy with a short sail followed by a trip to the pub. Plus others who have never set foot on a board before and want to learn. So sailing, windsurfing, kiteboarding for Cambridge students offers a wide variety of activities. There will certainly be something for you!

Eligibility

Because of our charitable status we can offer sailing, windsurfing, and kiteboarding only to students, including postgraduates. They must be students at universities and colleges that are non-commercial. Students need to be 18 years of age or older, and must be full-time if not at Cambridge University. Students from other institutions are not eligible to sail on teams representing Cambridge University. Activities at Grafham Water are restricted to Club equipment. Students wishing to sail or surf their own boat or board at Grafham must join Grafham Water SC.

Postdocs and others are very welcome in the Club as Senior Affiliate helpers ( by providing transport or instructing), with some opportunity for sailing, windsurfing, and kiteboarding when students are present. Senior Affiliates wishing to sail or surf their own boat or board at Grafham must join Grafham Water SC.

Some History

Cambridge is a major force in UK sailing and university team racing. It has dominated the universities team racing championships for the last 6 years (3 times winners and 3 times runners-up). Former members have gone on to gain Olympic Gold Medals. They have also achieved success at the highest levels – such as winning the Volvo Ocean Race. Detailed news items will be found in the News section. There is a good history of the Club in the History section of this website (the Club was founded in 1893).
